Good for: GTA concert road trips and cottage-country weekends with a casino attached.
Think twice if: You're relying on transit — it's about two hours' drive north of Toronto.

The short version

Rama dates from July 1996 and sits on Rama First Nation land near Orillia. In November 2024 its operator, Gateway Casinos, together with OLG and Rama First Nation, unveiled a big refurbishment: upgraded rooms, a larger spa and gym, a refreshed gaming floor, new restaurants. Progress by May 2025: room work rolling upward from the second floor, and a new ground-floor spa already open.

Sleeping

289 rooms in total. The resort hasn't put out specs for the refurbished ones, so the practical tip is simple: when booking, ask which floors are finished. That question decides whether you sleep in the old Rama or the new one.

Downtime

Heat is the theme of the new ground-floor spa, with saunas and steam rooms; for a swim you still head up to the third floor. A bigger fitness centre is also on the renovation list.

On stage

Over 5,000 seats make the Entertainment Centre one of the country's largest casino venues. Late-2026 bookings included Jesse Cook, the Righteous Brothers, Colin James and the Celtic Tenors, and those announcements put tickets at roughly $25–$89.

Gaming

Gateway publishes no counts of its own. Wikipedia's figures — 192,000 sq ft, about 1,800 slots, 50 tables — should therefore be read as approximate. CTV reported in May 2025 that the floor had been given a new look and upgraded machines. Ontario age: 19.

Eating and drinking

Rama's big new table is Atlas Steak and Fish at St. Germain's (November 2025) — the first Ontario outpost of Gateway's signature steak-and-seafood concept, its name a tribute to George St. Germain, the late Rama First Nation chief. Before that came MATCH Eatery and Public House in May 2025, set just inside the main rotunda, and in fall 2024 Chow Lucky Noodle Bar, with wok dishes, soups and bowls. Coffee? There's a Tim Hortons.

Around Rama

Budget roughly two hours for the Highway 400 run north from Toronto. Spare time nearby? Couchiching Beach Park has sand and gardens, the Leacock Museum is a National Historic Site, and Hardwood Ski and Bike works in both winter and summer.

Our call

Ontario's classic concert-plus-lake weekend. Wait for the renovation to reach your floor, eat at Atlas, catch the headliner — the show is why most guests make the drive.
