The short version
River Cree opened in October 2006, on Enoch Cree Nation territory on the western fringe of Edmonton. Who comes: hockey families, for the pair of NHL-size rinks known as the Twin Rinks (public skates, youth programmes), food fans for the first Gordon Ramsay Hell's Kitchen in Canada, and players for the floor.
Sleeping
Today's hotel: 249 rooms, 11 of them suites, sold as a full-service 4½-star. Each room gets a microwave, a mini fridge and a Keurig, and food can be sent up at any hour. Four types to choose from — the Luxury Family Suite, the Luxury One Bedroom Suite, a Traditional King and a Traditional Two Queen — shown on the official site as videos, not spec sheets.
Coming in 2027
Construction on a $200 million addition began in September 2024. Coming, per GlobalData and STAY Magazine: 18 floors, roughly 230–240 extra rooms, 30-plus suites, a large ballroom and a second pool, this one with two waterslides. Trade reports in June 2026 had the shell finished and a July 2027 opening pencilled in.
Gaming
The smoke-free main floor counts 46 tables and 1,665 slots, with the poker room's 14 tables on top. Smokers go to Embers: 14 tables, 405 slots. Alberta age: 18. Sign up to the River Cree Players Club (free) and room rates drop 15 per cent off the best available.
Where to eat
Hell's Kitchen is open for lunch and dinner; order the Ramsay classics — Beef Wellington, then sticky toffee pudding. With kids, use The Kitchen: at weekends it lays on breakfast from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. for $19.99, and Friday and Saturday nights are buffet dinners. Tap 25 is for sports; Fatburger stays open to 4 a.m., Cree Subs to 5 a.m.
Families, shows, transport
Children: since 29 July 2024 they may go, with an adult, to every non-gaming space — the rinks, restaurants and community events. Add a swim (pool, whirlpool), a 24-hour gym and the no-charge shuttle to West Edmonton Mall (five minutes), and a family weekend plans itself. The Venue can be set for anything between 500 and 2,500 people. Edmonton International is roughly 20–25 minutes by car. Parking: free. Valet: also free, 9:30 a.m. until 3 a.m.
Our call
If you're travelling with kids, no casino resort in Alberta handles them better — and Hell's Kitchen makes the trip worthwhile even without them. Book now for the rinks and the Wellington; come back once the 2027 tower opens.
