Spa first, casino second, Ottawa ten minutes over the bridge

Ten minutes' drive from downtown Ottawa, a five-star Hilton connects straight to a Loto-Québec casino between two lakes. Plan around the pools — heated, inside and out, all year — then Amerispa (17 rooms), the 1,100-seat theatre and a floor of 1,400-plus slots. For spa and casino under one roof, nothing in Canada beats it.

The short version

The casino came first, in 1996. In 2001 a Hilton, a conference centre and a theatre were added; the whole Gatineau complex now goes by Hôtel-Casino du Lac-Leamy. Ratings held: five CITQ stars since 2001 and a Four Diamond from CAA/AAA since 2002. Split of duties: hotel by Hilton, casino by Loto-Québec.

Sleeping

How many rooms? Depends who you ask — 349 per Tourisme Outaouais, or 312 rooms plus 37 suites per Bonjour Québec. Two standard choices: Classic (a pair of queens) or Deluxe (a king, plus a vanity at the entrance). Executive service covers the three highest floors, served by their own elevator. Suites: Junior, Murphy, One-bedroom. In every room: Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries, a safe, a small fridge, a 47-inch screen, robe and slippers; the views, says the hotel, run over Lac de la Carrière and Lac Leamy.

Check-in 4 p.m., check-out 11 a.m., in-room dining 6:30 a.m.–10:30 p.m. daily.

Downtime — the reason to come

Lac-Leamy's best asset is the water. Pools and hot tubs, indoors and out, are heated 365 days a year. Budget for Amerispa (17 rooms): the two-hour Serenity package is $308 Friday–Sunday or $252 Monday–Thursday, and any treatment includes use of the pools, whirlpools, steam bath and sauna. The fitness centre costs nothing and never closes.

Gaming

On the floor: a poker lounge, a Mise-o-jeu sportsbook corner, electronic terminals, 48 tables and slots beyond 1,400. Hours: 9 a.m.–5 a.m. Monday to Thursday, nonstop Friday to Sunday. Entry at 18 under Québec rules — if you look younger than 25, expect to show photo ID.

On stage and after dark

Théâtre du Casino layouts: rows for 1,100 or cabaret tables for 770; 18+ except at special events. Later on: Aléa, the nightclub, 11 p.m.–3 a.m. with a dress code; Bacchus for a fireside scotch or its cigar room; Bar 7 for DJs and bands Friday and Saturday evenings from seven, Latin nights on Thursdays.

Eating and drinking

Special-occasion dinner: Arôme, above Lac de la Carrière: seafood and grill, the three-course Experience menu, brunch on Sundays. Cheaper nights: Banco Bistro (rotisserie, pizza, steak) or L'Instant, where the smoked meat comes Montréal-style, in a sandwich or on poutine, and there's pasta too. TGV, the poolside snack bar, reopens next summer.

Getting there

From the door to Ottawa: about ten minutes by car — Parliament 6.4 km, the skateway 7.3 km, the ByWard Market 4.1 km. YOW is roughly 25 minutes away. Bus option: STO Rapibus to Lac-Leamy station. Outdoor parking is free, valet is paused until further notice, EV chargers are available, and pets up to 34 kg stay for a $50 fee.

Our call

Canada's calmest casino hotel, and the handiest for an Ottawa visit. Tip: do the spa Monday to Thursday, when it costs less, and keep Friday for the casino — it runs all night at weekends.
