Steak and slots in Langley City; no pool, no stage

Gateway's Cascades casino in Langley City, with a 77-room Coast hotel on the same site. Good for an ATLAS steak, a floor that never closes and free parking. Not for swimming or shows — there's no pool and no theatre.

The short version

Cascades is Gateway Casinos' Langley City property, in business since May 2005. Your room is next door at the Coast Langley City Hotel & Convention Centre (77 rooms; last refresh 2018). Six room types: an Executive Suite (balcony), a Hospitality Suite (wet bar), an accessible Queen (roll-in shower), a corner Queen with a sofa bed, the Coast King and Coast Two Queens.

Gaming

Gaming never stops on 80,000 sq ft. Slot count: over a thousand. Tables: blackjack, roulette, poker; there's bingo as well. Shows are a thing of the past here: in 2018 the 420-seat Summit Theatre gave way to the bingo hall.

Eating and drinking

ATLAS steak + fish is the Gateway signature brand. Hotel guests breakfast in The Breakfast Room; DJs and live music play at Match Eatery & Public House; on Sundays from 11 a.m. a brunch buffet fills the convention ballroom. Glacier Bar: 11 a.m.–2 a.m.

Practicalities

No swimming — the hotel says so itself. The gym, though, is open 24 hours. You can check in at 3 p.m. and must leave by noon; parking costs nothing. Pets need approval in advance and cost $25 nightly for one, $40 for two. Driving times: about an hour to YVR, around 30 minutes to Abbotsford airport. Nearby: the Greater Vancouver Zoo and Fort Langley.

Our call

Think of it as the Fraser Valley's dependable local: a casino first, with a tidy small hotel beside it. Resort-level extras aren't part of the deal, which is why it finishes last on our scored list.

Before you book

Can I swim at the Cascades Langley hotel?
There isn't one; the Coast hotel says so directly.
Does Cascades Langley still put on shows?
No — bingo took over the Summit Theatre's space when it closed in 2018.
